All this, due to career stress. And the heart breaking truth of the matter – that my experience wasn’t unique. 70% of Kiwis have suffered workplace burnout, according to a recent survey [1].
I was exhausted, but perpetually wired. Sleep was elusive, and I would drag myself out of bed each morning, leaning on strong coffee for a fleeting burst of jittery energy.
My moods were all over the place – anxiety, depression, irritability, and teary outbursts. I had panic attacks – and awoke on my 30th birthday with full body shakes, a tight jaw, clattering teeth and dry mouth.
